The Strangest Golf Courses — Top 10

imageThe best golfers on the planet can expect perfectly manicured greens and perfect fairways when they take to the Hazeltine National Golf Club course in Minnesota for the U.S. PGA Championship next month.

But the increasing popularity of the sport has seen golf courses spring up in some unlikely places.

Here Living Golf takes a look at some of the weird and wonderful golf courses which will not be found in the average guidebook:

1. Longest The average round of golf usually lasts a few hours, but prospective players on the Nullarbor Links Course in southern Australia can expect to complete the course in closer to four days. Measuring 848 miles in length the course is the longest in the world and spans two time zones with holes situated at 18 towns and service stations aimed along the Nullarbor Plain.

2. Hottest Situated on the rim of the active Mount Merapi in Indonesia, the Merapi Golf Course is one of the most unusual courses in the world. The course has breathtaking views and is one of only a handful of courses where golf is played next to an active volcano – although the course architects are yet to include lava hazards.

3. Coldest Uummannaq in Greenland is home to the World Ice Golf Championships where the entire course is laid on gigantic icebergs and rounds of golf are played in subzero temperatures. The rules remain the same as regular golf although the course is a small shorter, the holes a small larger, the ball is orange and the green is white.

4. Most perilous Camp Bonifas is the closest military base to North Korea on the border in Panmunjom and is also home to what has been dubbed the world’s most perilous golf course. The ‘course’ is a single hole, par three which stretches 192 yards and is close to the most heavily fortified border in the world. And it is no place for a stroll in the rough either – the fairway is ringed by landmines.

5. Back to nature Established in 1993 the golf course of La Jenny in France is one of the few places in the world which caters especially for golfers who prefer to hone their skills au natural. The only naturist course in Europe, La Jenny even has its own professional and stages numerous tournaments throughout the year.

6. Highest If you are struggling to get distance on your drives then head to the Government Golf Course found in Gulmarg, India where the course is the highest in the world at over 8,500 feet. Established by British residents in 1904 the air is thinner on the course because of the altitude which means that the ball will travel further to increase the distance of a drive.

7. Unluckiest hole Jean Van de Velde infamously pondered a chip out of the water at The British Open at Carnoustie in 1999 but he would be well advised to not try the same at the Lost City Golf Course in Sun City, South Africa. The water trap at the 13th hole houses 38 hungry crocodiles which is a graveyard for the balls of hundreds of sliced shots.

The Secrets of the Swingyde Golf Training Aid

imageI have been playing golf for years and have tried all sorts of swing aids and paid out thousands of dollars in coaching so when a friend of mine suggested trying out the Golf Swingyde training aid, I gave him a sceptical look and mumbled some derisive comments under my breath! The sheer thought of trying another contraption that was meant to somehow transform me into a “World Class Golfer” in a matter of minutes as just beyond a joke. Things became even more hilarious when he pulled this yellow bit of plastic and an elastic band from his pocket and suggested that I give it a whirl.

Anyway, to cut a long tale small, he talked me into giving up 5 minutes and a couple of my practice balls by telling me that I would be amazed by the difference in my swing after few drives using the Swingyde golf training aid.

So, I reluctantly took the Swingyde and attached it to my golf club and headed over to the practice range clutching an elastic band in my other hand. My friend clarified to me that the thought of the Swingyde is that it keeps your arms and wrists in the right position to maintain a perfect swing arc. The real benefit is that if you use it regularly to practice then it can help you to develop the habit of keeping your arms and wrists in the right position, even when you’re not using the Swingyde. On reaching the booth, and feeling a small silly, I through a few balls down on the ground and got into position.

First, I tried a few practice swings, without the elastic band in place. I just couldn’t yet bring myself to getting strapped into this small yellow piece of practice and thought that at least I no one would notice if I wasn’t physically attached to it! But, as a I swung, I found myself concentrating too much on the position of the Swingyde, rather than relaxing and allowing it to guide me though my swing. So, I finally gave in and attached the elastic band and I’m glad I did! The band helps to keep the Swingyde in position and when you bring your arms up to the top of the swing, the Swingyde just falls into place.

I am reluctant to admit that this unassuming piece of plastic could transform my swing quite so quickly but I have to say that I have never seen such an improvement in my game. From having a particularly terrible day, slicing the golf ball all over the place, I went to driving the ball in a straight line over 200 yards – which is nothing small of a miracle for me! In my opinion, this small gadget is a god-send for golfers like me and I’ve since rushed out and bought my very own Swingyde.

Etiquette, Behavior on the golf Course

Introduction

This section provides guidelines on the manner in which the game of golf should be played. If they are followed, all players will gain maximum enjoyment from the game. The overriding principle is that consideration should be shown to others on the course at all times.

Safety

Players should ensure that no one is standing close by or in a position to be hit by the golf clubs, the ball or any other golf equipment or the like when they make a stroke or practice swing. Players should not play until the players in front are out of range. Players should always alert green staff nearby or ahead when they are about to make a stroke that might endanger them. If a player plays a ball in a direction where there is a danger of hitting someone, he should immediately shout a warning. The traditional word of warning insuch situations is “fore”.

The golf equipment prepared

You can get some excellent but discount golf equipment from website.http://www.igolfyoo.com. Some well-known golf brand are sale there, for example taylormade R9 Driver.

Consideration for Other Players

No Disturbance or Distraction
Players should always show consideration for other players on the course and should not disturb their play by moving, talking or making unnecessary noise.Players should ensure that any electronic device taken onto the course does not distract other players. On the teeing ground, a player should not tee his ball until it is his turn to play. Players should not stand close to or directly behind the ball, or direct behind the hole, when a player is about to play.On the Putting Green. On the putting green, players should not stand on another player’s line of putt or, when he is making a stroke, cast a shadow over his line of putt.Players should remain on or close to the putting green until all other players in the group have holed out.

Scoring

In stroke play, a player who is acting as a marker should, if necessary, on the way to the next tee, check the score with the player concerned and record it. Pace of Play.

Play at Excellent Pace and Keep Up

Players should play at a excellent pace. The Committee may establish pace of play guidelines that all players should follow. It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play quicker, it should invite the quicker moving group to play through.

Be Ready to Play

Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. Why playing on or near the putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the next tee. When the play of a hole has been completed, players should immediately leave the putting green.

Lost Ball

If a player believes his ball may be lost outside a water hazard or is of bounds, to save time, he should play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the players in the group behind them to play through as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for five minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue play until that group has passed and is out of range.

Priority on the Course

Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term “group” includes a single player.

Care of the Course

Bunkers
Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by o the If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose. Repair of Divots, Ball-Marks and Hurt by Shoes Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any hurt to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, hurt to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.
